Q & A
Travel Doctor Q&A
by: News Canada

Dr. Suni Boraston

Vancouver, BC

Q: I am going on a vacation to Mexico and have been told that you cannot eat or drink anything without being affected by Montezuma's Revenge. Is this true and is it worth going if I am going to be sick for the entire trip?

Signed: "questioning my vacation choice"

A: There is no reason to question your trip; you simply have to be a smart traveller. Travellers' Diarrhea, also called Montezuma's Revenge, is the most common medical problem affecting travellers going from developed to developing countries, including Mexico, the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and most parts of Asia.

Here are a few tips to keep you from getting sick:

• Drink only carbonated bottled water or soft drinks, bottled fruit juices, alcoholic beverages without ice and hot beverages.

• Only eat fruit or vegetables that you have peeled yourself

• Make sure that foods are well cooked

• Talk to your doctor about a new, drinkable vaccine called Dukoral™ — the first and only oral vaccine that helps to protect against Travellers' Diarrhea. Dukoral is also effective in children over two and seniors. While this new vaccine helps protect against Travellers' Diarrhea, you still need to take precautions in order to stay healthy.

Have a great trip!

Extraordinary Jobs for Ordinary People - editor Kim DavisNews & Views by Kim Davis

Yet again, this newsletter is going out on Tuesday, rather than Monday as I always intend it to do. This time there's a lesson in the delay for all of us who publish to the world wide web. The hold-up has been due to my waiting for permission to reprint an article. The author granted permission, but as he'd posted it to a website that hosts travelogs, I thought I'd better go over there and make sure there were not going to be any copyright problems. Sure enough, there's a very clear clause that says something along the lines of, "You post here, we own it." So let that be a lesson folks - if you ever want to write for publication, be careful where you post your material! I never received permission from the website where the story was originally posted, so sorry, Vishal, I could not run the "Cape Town" story.

Instead, I thought I'd introduce you all to the concept of "coaching." As such, the feature article is by motivational speaker and life coach, Randy McDonald, and in case you're interested in finding a coach who specializes in ADVENTURE, here is a list of several excellent ADVENTURE COACHES I know, (These folks help to bring the adventure inside you out, & take you on outdoor adventures as an integral part of their coaching):

Todd Canedy at http://www.toddcanedy.com
Ellen Britt at http://www.primalwaters.com
Tracy Needham at http://www.adventurouslifecoach.com
Deb Martin at http://www.portagecoach.com
Check ‘em out. Subscribe to their newsletters.

On this same topic, as I thought about how to present this material to you all, the big question I kept circling was "What is Coaching?" Then as if by magic, I was introduced to yet another coach who has answered that question beautifully for me:

So what is coaching?
Coaching is a way of understanding people in their wholeness, followed by supportive actions and conversations consistent with that understanding. It is an interactive process that benefits both the client and the coach that supports the client in the process of designing their life. To be effective a Coach must reveal what is really at work and provide insights that reveal the truth that increases the self expression, fulfillment and capacity of the client.

John Schaar wrote:
"The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but by a place that is created, first in mind, next in will, then in activity. The future is not some place we are going to,but a place we are creating. The paths are not to be discovered, but made, and the activity of making the future changesboth the maker and the destination."

Here's to the never ending journey and the joy of discovery that we are all offered in this incredible ride that is life.

Peace!

Feature

Which Road? by Randy McDonald

I would like to offer something for you to consider.

I am sure you remember the quote: “If you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail!” A second quote, or is it a fact? “Most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do their life!” Everyone knows that the most productive day of the year is the day before you leave on vacation. You seem to get more done in that day than on any other single day of the year!

If you were planning a trip from San Francisco to New York City, would you just get in the car and start driving? “I know where New York City is, it is EAST” you say, and off you drive? Sure enough it is east, and with enough experimentation, and trial and error you would make it to New York. After all, when you get close enough there are road signs!

Is this the way you are running your life and career? “I’ll drive to the first intersection and then decide which way to turn.” I would venture to say that many of you do not even have as definitive a destination, and no map either.

The days of having a single career are pretty much over. Most people will have three-five careers in their lifetimes.

As with the finding New York City analogy, do you want to wait until you are at a crossroads, (because of a layoff, bad job, boredom or other crisis), and be forced to choose which way to go in haste? Or, would rather have a plan? How long do you wish to wander and how much time and energy do you wish to expend trying to find the right road? Especially when feeling pressured due to a lack of income and your financial obligations? Do you even know what destination you are seeking?

When explorers are preparing to enter new territory, they always seek a native guide if they can find one. This makes the journey so much easier, even when they know the destination. When they are unsure of where they want to go, the Guide can help them make that decision as well by giving them options and describing them. Then they are ‘guided’ through the new area and sometimes are lead astray because they let the wrong person be the guide.

Who have been your guides so far on life’s journey? Your mother, father, boss, school counselor, a Mentor perhaps? Have they guided you to wonderful destinations? Places where you truly wanted to be? Or, were those destinations they would have chosen for themselves and not really what you would have chosen on your own? Were they emotional and or career dead ends?

So, where do you find a guide you can trust? One who can help you find within yourself the destination that is truly yours? Someone who has the tools to continue to help and guide you as you move into what is for you, uncharted territory?

Might I suggest a Coach? They have no hidden agenda where you are concerned, only your best interests at heart. They have access to tools to help you, like assessments. Even Myers Briggs if you need to find where your real interests lie. There are many Coaches available; you only need to find one that you are compatible with. I will help you with that if you like. I have one and use him often as well.
