Q & A - Banking for Yachties

Dear Kim,

I have found a job on yacht that is based in malaysia at the moment. I will be flying there from South Africa and then we moving onto Burma, Thailand and then Indonesia then onto East Australia. I just wanted to thank you for your help and all the information that you have forwarded to me.

If it is not to much of a problem would it be at all possible to maybe send me some information on bank accounts and how do I go about opening them? It is a bit difficult seeing as i am not going to be in one place, but I need to obviously transfer money into my South African bank account from where ever I am.

Much appreciated and hope you have a gd day!!

Regards, L.T.

Dear L.T.,

Congratulations!

I used an offshore account, which accepts multiple currencies, transfers funds with ease, and comes with a debit card that acts like a credit card, allowing you to make purchases worldwide and withdraw cash anywhere there is an ATM machine. Your employer will most likely find this a simple solution as well. He / She will simply set up a monthly transfer order into your account and forget about it. You can do the same if there is a set sum you need to transfer to your home account each month. The Offshore bank will take care of all the currency conversions for you. All the big banks now have online services, so you don't even have to phone them to find out if your deposits have been entered on time. Just be careful with pass codes and such in the internet cafes.

Here are a couple of banks to start with:

At Barclay's international Banking Site, www.internationalbanking.barclays.com, go to "personal banking", then to "global solutions". There is an application form at the bottom of the page. (I have used this bank, and can tell you that they are reliable and easy to work with, but they do charge per transaction fees.)

HSBC Offshore has a South African office and a live representative there who can help you get set up. From what I have read about this bank they operate in a way that is very similar to what I am familiar with. Only hiccup here could be the 5000 pound sterling initial deposit to open an account. If this is a problem, be sure to ask it you are required to maintain that balance, most likely that will not be a requirement.

Extraordinary Jobs for Ordinary People - editor Kim DavisNews & Views by Kim Davis

Late again! I am still struggling to catch up this week. My littlest kid had a birthday, and that, combined with the arrival of one of our favorite house guests consumed my whole week. The best news from my neck of the woods is that Spring has arrived in East Texas! The Dogwood and Redbud trees are in bloom, and it even dried out enough for us to cut part of the lawn over the weekend. AND my Handsome Hunk actually got to have a real weekend for the first time since Christmas. (Of course, he used his "relaxation" time to build a new swing set for the girls, but I guess that's what he considers fun!)

I promised you some details about my trip to Mexico, and I managed to transcribe a few of my notes. You'll find those observations in First Impressions - Akumal. This little section is incomplete, so please look for more detailed insider info about this lovely Riviera Maya town in future editions. I had hoped to have photos for you too, but my colleagues, who assured me that they'd send the photos in time for LAST week's newsletter are still trying to figure out how to e-mail digital photos!

Dare to make your life fun - otherwise, what's the point of living?

First Impressions - Akumal

by Kim Davis

1st Night in Akumal
Feb. 26/27, 2004

This place is so much more than I anticipated. From the beautifully formed swans (made of bath towels) to the origami flower pot folded into the start of the toilet roll, this place exudes class. Up until now, I'd only had the owner's descriptions and out of date photos to draw from for my copy. I am also really please to be staying in the room I've been admiring in photographs for so many months.

The owner of the property, Paula Norman, tells me that all the maids here take pride in their towel folding skills, but I feel special all the same. Paula's partner, Bob, says all the fancy folding of everything in sight indicates that the housekeeper has too much time on her hands!

I've written some flattering copy with only second hand information up to this point, but now I've gotten to the true beauty that is Cristal Azul. Miriam and Jaime, who take care of the housekeeping and maintenance are adorable, kind and talented.

Driving into Akumal, even in the dark, I was surprised by the "gated community" atmosphere. I had never imagined Akumal to be so up-market. This village reminds me of some of the very exclusive communities on the French Riviera like Saint Jean 'cap Ferrat. The houses and hotels are first rate, and Cristal Azul is an incredible bargain. With 5-star appointments and furnishings you would easily pay double the prices at another establishment.

Each unit is unique with tastefully rendered murals of flowers and fishes. The L-shaped built-in sofas will accommodate my two children, and I can't wait to return with them! The ceilings are high with open arches accenting all the doors and windows. And the doors are MASSIVE. The construction is all reminiscent of Spain.

We had a good laugh about the 17 MEGA speed bumps on the road from the entrance of Akumal to Cristal Azul. Together with the strategically placed security guards, they ensure that there will be no loud or fast traffic in Akumal.

Tourist Trap Souvenir Shops
Playa del Carmen
Feb. 27, 2004

Noisy, dirty, unattractive and packed with identical tourist shops full of cheap souvenirs - that is my impression of Playa del Carmen. Just 20 minutes' drive from Akumal, this is the place to buy gifts for friends and family back home, just don't forget to barter. I found my good command of the Spanish language gave me an immediate discount, and I actually got a hammock for $15 US at the 3rd shop I tried - the previous shops had asked $35 for the same hammock.

And there are woven blankets everywhere. Depending on the style you're after, you may be able to find one for as little as $5 US. The silver jewellery, turquoise, amber, and lapis lazuli are also quite reasonably priced, and you can find a lot of pretty pieces. I was also pleased to find a jeweller who told me he could copy a favourite earring I've lost the mate for. Just have a look in more than one shop before you actually buy - otherwise you could blow a lot of money fast!

Other goodies no self-respecting tourist should go home without include the traditional embroidered dresses for Mom and the girls, and onyx chess sets for everybody else. In many parts of Mexico the liquor is inexpensive, but we didn't find any remarkable savings on the Riviera Maya in the booz department.

The beach at Playa does not compare with Akumal at all. It is crowded and rocky, and the sand had not been manicured like Akumal.

...more Akumal info to come!
